Do Babys(children) Need Allergy Mattress Pads
An allergy is an immune reaction to an irritable substance in the environment. They could be from many sources food, dirt, plants, animals and fibers. This then begs the question “will an allergy mattress pad prevent my baby(child) from having allergys”. Of course the answer is no. What it will do is protect them from dust mite allergy and allow their immune system to attack others that may exist.
The body sees irritants as dangerous and emits chemicals such as histamines. These cause potentially harmful and are uncomfortable. An allergy mattress pad separates the baby(child) from dust mites in the place most used during the day. The average adult spends one third of their life sleeping most babies and children spend more..
Dust mites are microscopic organisms that live in carpets and fabrics and feed on dead flakes of human and animal skin. They in themselves are harmless our reactions come from their protein or simply their dead cells and body waste. “This reaction triggers inflammation in the lining of the nasal passages (allergic rhinitis), causing sneezing, runny nose and other signs and symptoms associated with hay fever. For some people, dust mite allergy may be the primary cause of inflammation and contraction of airways of the lungs (asthma), resulting in wheezing, shortness of breath and other breathing difficulties.”(Mayo Clinic)
Just using the allergy mattress pad by itself isn’t the total solution. Luckily, removing allergens and thus preventing or reducing allergic reactions can be a very easy process. Children can develop respiratory allergies from inhaling accumulated mites in areas that aren’t cleaned properly or regularly. Bedding, clothing and comforters should be washed in hot water at least once a week. It is also important to vacuum and dust weekly; a vacuum cleaner with a high efficiency particulate arresting (HEPA) filter helps trap particles normal dusting and vacuuming can miss. It is also important to clean or replace heating ducts, furnace and air conditioning filters whenever they’re in use. Ultra violet lamps passed over furniture can also help. Make sure you wash your child’s favorite plush toys as often as you would his or her bedding and clothing.
It is impossible in today’s world to protect from everything. Even the computer you are using will add to toxic waste. If you start protecting from the things that you can early it will take longer for a build up to occur. If your child already has asthma then the above measures may not be enough. You may have to remove stuffed toys, rugs, cloth curtains, and use leather or vinyl furniture. Your child should be checked by a doctor if they are showing any respiratory symptoms. They usually won’t prescribe allergy medicine to children under six months but they may have treatment options that will fit your child.
